A forecast calling for a string of sunny late summer days prompted Carol and I to make last-minute plans for a quick getaway to the Adirondacks. We headed out mid-morning on Tuesday and several hours later we were cruising across Lake Champlain on the Charlotte to Essex ferry, with views of the Dix Range, Nippletop, Rocky Peak Ridge, Giant Mountain, Green Mountain, Knob Lock Mountain and Big Slide.
After checking in to our room in Lake Placid, we headed out of town for a short evening hike to Owen Pond in the Sentinel Range Wilderness.
The trail climbs only a couple hundred feet in 0.6 mile, passing this open spot on Owen Pond Brook.
Tenacity.
The evening light was beautiful on Owen Pond and the spur of Kilburn Mountain that rises beyond it. High up on the spur the headwall of the Kilburn (aka Monument) Slide was visible. John "1HappyHiker" and I climbed up that slide back in 2015.

Stewart Mountain in the distance. These peaks of the Sentinel Range are wild and trailless, and the bushwhacking is reportedly fierce. This pond, and its neighbors Copperas Pond, Winch Pond and trailless Marsh Pond, provide short hikes with a real wilderness flavor.
