After the long drive (with ferry ride), the first hike of a quick two-night getaway to the Adirondacks.
From Rt. 73 I made the short hike up the Round Pond-Dix Trail to beautiful Round Pond. A campsite spur trail led to this nice view.
A herd path led to nearby Twin Pond, with a ridge of Giant Mountain seen in the distance.
The lower NE slopes of the Dix Range are bushwhacking nirvana, with open birch woods and numerous low, nameless ledgy knobs offering fine views. This was the fourth time I've gone whacking in this area over the years.
This knob overlooked Twin Pond and Round Pond, with Round Mountain beyond.
The high peaks were shrouded on this afternoon, but Giant Mountain briefly emerged, allowing a glimpse of the huge slides on its east face.
The close-up view of the Dix Range I was hoping for was not to be today.
South Dix (Carson Peak) did peek out ever so briefly.

On the way to my room in Lake Placid, I stopped at the entrance to Adirondack Loj Road for a look at the next day's objectives, Street and Nye Mountains.
